What's the "Meta" with Facebook?

As you've probably heard, earlier this month, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook was rebranding itself as "Meta." We’re here with a quick myth bust and some notes to help you make sense of what’s happening and what this may mean for your business.

  • The metaverse broadly refers to the idea of a shared virtual platform that people can access through different devices and where they can move through digital environments. The “Meta” rebrand refers to the parent company of Facebook that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Facebook the product will maintain the same name.

  • The name signals the way in which Mark Zuckerburg and his crew view the future of social media: the successor of the internet as we know it now. (If you’re unsure what that means, this article is helpful.) This has naturally raised questions about who owns the Internet, but Meta insists it’s not trying to control access.

  • You might be wondering WTF is Zuckerburg doing with a rebrand while there are so many unaddressed issues with his company such as privacy, misinformation, and its effect on young people? We don’t disagree, but this article helps explain the logic behind this strategy.

  • Bottom Line: Conversations about the role of social media in society are ongoing, and we believe they’re essential. At the same time, we’re firm believers that social media can be a tool of positive change, and is essential to any brand. GoldBear Media can help you establish a social presence that is comfortable for you!
