Instagram Reels & Stories. What’s The Difference and How To Use Them

If you’re like many in the world of social media, understanding how to use some of the different features available these days can be quite daunting. If terms like grid, post, story, or reel send you into a panic, it’s ok. Today we will shed some light on the differences between Instagram reels and stories, and how they should be used in social media management.

First, let’s unpack some of the main differences between a story and a reel inside of the Instagram platform.

Stories:

  • Stories are meant to be short

  • Will only stay on your profile for 24 hours

  • Designed to connect with your current audience

  • Responses and reactions are sent to you through DM

  • 7-15 seconds depending on your content of choice.

  • Can be posts, photos, videos or a combination

Reels:

  • Reels can be up to 90 seconds long

  • Remain on your profile indefinitely

  • Designed to connect with new audience

  • Comments or reactions show up as comments on the reel itself

  • More editing capability with audio/video

  • Only video content

Now that you know the basics, let’s take a look at how to use these tools in your social media to increase brand awareness and overall engagement. I’ll also discuss how these tools can strategically be used to deepen the relationship with your audience.

Stories:

Stories are designed first and foremost to connect with your current audience and people who are already following your content. Think of it as a quick check-in with your followers. “Hey all, here’s what I’m working on.  Here’s what I’m thinking about, etc.” Any feedback you receive comes directly to your DM’s and opens the door to further conversation and engagement. Since stories only last on your profile for 24 hours, you can use it throughout the day to build and develop your relationship with your current audience.

Reels:

Reels are designed to reach an audience that has no relationship to your brand and will be seen by the Instagram community at large. Because they are going to the IG community at large, they can be an awesome way to gain new followers to your product or brand. Reels also offer a better opportunity for community engagement because reactions and comments go directly on the reel itself. Finally, reels have no shelf life, meaning they stay on your profile until you choose to remove them.

In Conclusion, if you’re not using both of these tools as part of your Instagram growth strategy, you’re missing out on vital opportunities to connect with, your audience and grow your follower base.
